Summer Newman gets a terrifying phone call as the sun goes down over Chancellor Park. She cautiously follows the mystery call, but is shocked to find herself in the presence of the one person she never expected to see again: her mother, Phyllis Summers. Summer hugs Phyllis, overcome with a tidal wave of emotions as she tries to take in the reality that her mother is alive and standing in front of her.
Summer’s joy is bubbling over as they catch up, and she proposes they phone her brother, Daniel Romalotti Jr., to tell him the fantastic news. But her relief is short-lived since Phyllis quickly knocks down the notion with a serious frown on her face.
Phyllis brings the news to Summer that she murdered Jeremy Stark in self-defense, a revelation that leaves Summer in disbelief. Summer’s thoughts are racing as she attempts to grasp the seriousness of the situation. Phyllis begs her daughter to conceal the truth about her homecoming because she is worried about the consequences.

Summer is torn between her love for her mom and the weight of responsibility she feels to keep such a huge secret. For Phyllis’s sake, she is willing to compromise her morals and tell lies to her loved ones, even her husband, Kyle Abbott. In the meantime, Daniel’s hunt for information regarding his mother’s disappearance has left him feeling hopeless. When he finds out the truth, he is crushed, feeling injured and betrayed by both Summer and Phyllis.
Summer and Phyllis come up with a strategy as the crisis worsens to clear Diane Jenkins’ reputation and keep Phyllis safe. However, Summer’s relationship with Kyle becomes strained as Kyle begins to suspect something is wrong due to their concealment. Summer is divided between her love for her husband and her allegiance to her family, and she struggles with the guilt of lying to him.
