A horrifying incident unfolded in New York City on Wednesday, as a man carried out a brutal hammer attack that claimed the life of a mother and left her two young children fighting for survival. The shocking details were revealed by NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell during a press conference held later that day.
Described as a “horrific” and “senseless act of violence,” the incident occurred around 1:50 p.m. The 72nd Precinct responded to a distress call at an apartment located on 52nd Street near 5th Avenue in Sunset Park.
Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement swiftly apprehended the suspect, who was attempting to exit the building. The suspect was promptly taken into custody and was reportedly covered in blood.
Inside the apartment on the second floor, officers discovered three victims who had sustained “serious” injuries. The preliminary investigation revealed that all three had been subjected to a violent attack involving a hammer.
The victims comprised a 43-year-old mother, along with her 5-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter. They were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Tragically, the mother succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. The two young children are now engaged in a battle for their lives.
The apartment housed the mother and her children in one room, while the suspect and his 9-year-old son occupied another room. A third person occupied the remaining room.
Chief Chell expressed the collective sentiment of the officers, saying, “I think I can speak for all the officers when I can say our community, our prayers are with this family at this time.”
The investigation into this heart-wrenching incident is currently underway. As authorities work to uncover the motives behind this tragic event, the community is left reeling from the devastating loss and praying for the recovery of the innocent young victims.
